Dear Wakefield Community,
The Parks & Recreation Department has been watching, learning, and in continuous meetings over the last 8 weeks in order to prepare and plan for our summer programs. The ever changing situation of Covid-19 and its unpredictable nature have never been far from our minds. We have been reviewing the CDC & HHS guidelines, speaking with other local departments, the National Parks & Recreation Association, & the American Camp Association during this time in order to better navigate what this summer could look like.
If we were to offer a summer program this year it would be much different than in years past. All staff and campers would need to be supplied with masks and gloves which must be worn all day, every day. Playground equipment has been ordered closed, there would be no fields trips, beaches aren’t allowing you to sit and recreate. Just the basic task of applying sunscreen would be problematic. We would only be allowed 8 children and 2 counselors in a group that couldn’t have any interaction with other campers or staff, for the entire summer. The size of our facility alone doesn’t allow for that to happen.
It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we have made the difficult decision to cancel summer camp this year. Please know that this decision hasn’t been easy. We understand the hardship this may cause on some families. During this pandemic the safety of our staff, campers, families, and our community is our first priority
We are committed to find ways to help meet community needs and stay connected through modified and creative programming. We are hoping that we will be able to hold smaller activities later in the summer. Please keep on the lookout for updates through our website, social media, and direct emails.
Hopefully we can all be together soon and celebrate some type of normalcy.
